Rubber hardens with age. A platen that was pliable in 1955 is often as hard as a broom handle today, which causes punched-through periods, a harsh sound, poor paper feed, and premature wear on the type. Recovering replaces the old rubber with fresh material ground to the correct diameter, then we reinstall and check line spacing and paper feed. Feed rollers are recovered at the same time whenever they show flat spots or glazing.
