Experience with your type of machine
A shop that mostly services portable manuals may not be the right place for an IBM Selectric, and vice versa. Ask directly whether the technician has worked on your model, and how recently.

A reputable shop inspects the machine first and then gives a written quote covering labor and parts. Be wary of anyone who quotes a price over the phone without seeing the typewriter.
Parts sourcing
Typewriter parts have not been manufactured for decades. Ask where replacement parts come from: an established parts stock, donor machines, or newly made rubber from a platen service.
Turnaround and communication
Good shops tell you a realistic timeline and call you if the plan changes once the machine is apart. Ask how you will be updated.
Respect for originality
For heirloom or collectible machines, make sure the shop preserves original decals, paint, and character rather than stripping and repainting by default.
